Thanks for stopping by for our weekly open thread. In case you’ve been in the woods somewhere (your only excuse for not reading daily), I answer questions on Saturdays here. No subject matter is off limits; we encourage creative inquisitiveness ‘round here.
I’ve been answering questions on the daily posts less often due to time constraints, but I’m still reading your comments. As always, I appreciate your continual support. Let’s tackle some questions.
Msquared:
When you have time, I’d love to see a sample day or two of meals.
I love hearing the update and have drastically reduced my grains… My result has been mostly positive, but at times sluggish and tired.
I think I need to up the calories again and obviously get more sleep.
Let’s roll with yesterday’s meals.
- Breakfast: 5 whole organic fried eggs over a medium sweet potato all mashed up with some sea salt and black pepper.
- Snack 1: Smoked clams in olive oil, Fuji apple
- Lunch: Huge salad with pumpkin seeds, various veggies, and baked cod with butter, garlic and capers
- Snack 2: Pink lady apple
- Snack 3: Chicken with bell peppers and onions.
- Dinner: 1/2 pound London broil with grated parmesan cheese, small sweet potato
Still hungry,
Kap

What are your thoughts on fermented foods such as sauerkraut and kimchi? I have read a lot about their benefits to gut health but haven’t yet added them to my diet.
Iain,
First, I love sauerkraut, particularly with a spicy Italian sausage and raw onions on a doughy bun with a near frozen lager….oops, I sense that’s not what you care about knowing.
I’ve been crushing these foods for years and dig the flavor. The health benefits are undeniable. Check this out from breakingmuscle.com:
Some of the important health benefits of fermentation:
- Fermentation is the only type of preparation of foods that cannot destroy certain nutrients, will creates more nutrients and enhances others
- It removes toxins and harmful bacteria found in many foods.
- It will improve your digestion, especially when consumed before your meal and also allows for your nutrients to be absorbed properly.
- It aids in the preservation and creation of important enzymes.
- Fermentation is a huge supporter to your immune function. It increases your B vitamins, omega-3 fatty acids, digestive enzymes, lactase and lactic acid that fight off harmful bacteria.
I eat sauerkraut straight from the jar, but it’s a splendid compliment to any spicy animal flesh or chopped up with cucumber in a salad to provide a subtly cool, milder experience.
Enjoy,
Kap
