If you’re looking for a way to improve your health today, there are countless posts on this site that will serve your purpose. This isn’t one of them. However, if you’re in search of a more efficient and pleasurable way to eat eggs, salads and more, keep reading. Let’s welcome the most under-appreciated utensil in the drawer, the spork. Here’s a challenge that I often face when eating my giant, beautifully constructed salads. I’ve worked my way down to the end of the meal, and I’m nearly satisfied. I’ve stabbed at the greens, the chicken, the cauliflower and the…
There is a reason children around the world are told “eat your veggies” instead of “drink them.” I’m frequently asked about juicing, cleanses and liquid diets. My reply is generally the same: “I’m thrilled that you want to eat more fruits and veggies. I’m also pleased that you’re making an attempt to become more nutritionally efficient. But why not just eat the damn carrot and greens and skip the juicer?” In doling out this advice, I’m well aware of the inevitable arguments. Here’s a predictable one that I refuse to listen to: juicing is more convenient than eating all…
Eating until you’re close, but not completely full, may help you live a longer, healthier life. Lately, I’ve been experimenting with splitting my dinner into two meals. I’ve found that eating ¾ of my food prior to the “red light time,” followed by the remaining ¼ after my television segment is done leaves me sharper and more energetic. This likely has to do with digestion. The thermic effect of food is essentially the amount of energy used by your body to digest, absorb and make waste of the food you ingest. Obviously then, the more energy currently being used…
I aim to plan and consciously choose all of my indulgences. I have the knowledge and willpower to do so, but occasionally, I will have a substantial misfire. I was in Boston, my home away from home, for the 2004 World Series reunion. I splurged nutritionally as I had intended, but I didn’t map out my large nutritional stumble while watching the game. I had it all pre-navigated. My two men (12 and 14) and I love to experience travel through food. We think it’s the most efficient and interesting way to explore the culture of a city. We…
Kale is certainly the trendy kid on the block when it comes to dark leafy greens. It has earned a place in my kitchen, but some other greens deserve consideration as well. One cup of kale has 36 calories and 0 grams of fat. Who cares? Almost all your greens will boast exceptionally low calories, and we all know by now that fat doesn’t make you fat, sugar makes you fat. From this standpoint, the green (or purple!) beauty isn’t all that special. Just like evaluating a pitcher in baseball though, the peripherals are what give kale that “booya.”…
I woke up this morning feeling like telling a couple of stories. You should gather by now that I’m not a doctor, so don’t browse for medical advice in this post. I’m simply sharing a few of the things that came up over the course of my professional baseball career. Hopefully you can extract a takeaway or two. I received an earful of medical recommendations during my MLB days. Most of it was spot on. On a few occasions, however, I was led comically astray. Those particular experiences still entertain me. I quickly learned that neither the doctors nor…
For today’s rendition of Sweet Thursday, I’m providing a list of 5 healthy foods certain to deliver a nectarous experience. These foods aren’t candy, so you’ll have to slow down, chew, and savor the experience to encounter the full burst of flavors. You’ll feel more present as a result and perhaps even experience the nutrients entering your bloodstream. Note: FIHIWCO = Food I hope it will “crowd out”. Sweet potatoes and yams are delectable members of the dark orange vegetable family and rule when it comes to vitamin A content. Try a baked sweet potato (also brimming with vitamin C,…
