Kale is certainly the trendy kid on the block when it comes to dark leafy greens. It has earned a place in my kitchen, but some other greens deserve consideration as well. One cup of kale has 36 calories and 0 grams of fat. Who cares? Almost all your greens will boast exceptionally low calories, and we all know by now that fat doesn’t make you fat, sugar makes you fat. From this standpoint, the green (or purple!) beauty isn’t all that special. Just like evaluating a pitcher in baseball though, the peripherals are what give kale that “booya.”…
I woke up this morning feeling like telling a couple of stories. You should gather by now that I’m not a doctor, so don’t browse for medical advice in this post. I’m simply sharing a few of the things that came up over the course of my professional baseball career. Hopefully you can extract a takeaway or two. I received an earful of medical recommendations during my MLB days. Most of it was spot on. On a few occasions, however, I was led comically astray. Those particular experiences still entertain me. I quickly learned that neither the doctors nor…

Tonight, I made radish soup for my boys and myself. It so was delicious, I figured I would share the recipe with you. First, so you can be totally up to speed on the health benefits, let’s rewind. Remember my post on radishes? If the floating thought bubble above your head reads “This man has no life,” you are correct. I know that most folks aren’t going to snack on radishes like I do. If you won’t, I know for damn sure your kids (or brothers and sisters) won’t either. Ever prepare a meal for a child (or teenager)…
Sunflower seeds are the gift of the beautiful sunflower that has rays of petals emanating from its bright yellow, seed-studded center. Thanks, whfoods.com. I don’t think I would have gotten away with that definition in the dugout, though. Most of us know them better as those salty jobs stuffed into the cheeks of baseball players and fans across the nation. Yadier Molina spits ’em as he approaches the dish, but frankly, his top seed capacity per cheek is an utter embarrassment. Brother, you’re a beast of a player, but let’s up the count. I looked forward to my daily…
Don’t go on the radish only diet; you’ll wither away and die. You should definitely eat radishes, however. They are supremely healthy and will help control your appetite. From organicfacts.net: Radishes are very filling, which mean that they satisfy your hunger without running up your calorie count. They are also low in digestible carbohydrates, high in roughage and contain a lot of water, making radishes a very good dietary option for those who are determined to lose weight. Okay, I made up the radish diet thing. It doesn’t exist (does it?). I don’t advocate making weight loss your aim….
I nailed the nutrition element of my prep for my first ever baseball broadcast tonight. I spent Saturday morning at a farmers’ market in downtown Cincinnati. The produce was bountiful, and I acquired the most exceptionally tasty tomato in existence. I walked away with a hell of an appreciation for the friendly food growers of the Midwest’s Queen City. I travelled east from California to provide color for my initial leap into the television baseball broadcast world. Alongside Thom Brennaman, I called the Reds versus the Cardinals, which taught me a great deal. Being a rookie at anything is…
